Ireland’s Gate Theatre presents Waiting for Godot

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents Ireland’s Gate Theatre seminal production of Waiting for Godot October 3 through 5, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. and October 5 at 2 p.m., as part of the Kennedy Center’s etcetera! series. The press opening will take place in the Center’s Terrace Theater on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.

Beckett's first stage play portrays two tramps trapped in the endless waiting for the arrival of a mysterious personage named Godot, while disputing the appointed place and hour of his coming. Originally produced by the Gate Theatre to mark the 50th anniversary of the play’s first performance, Waiting for Godot stars Stephen Brennan as Lucky, Barry McGovern as Vladimir, Johnny Murphy as Estragon, and Alan Stanford as Pozzo. The play is directed by Walter Asmus with sets and costumes by Louis le Brocquy and lighting design by Rupert Murray.

The Solas Nua monthly book club will meet to discuss Nohow On: Company, Ill Seen Ill Said, Worstward Ho: Three Novels by Samuel Beckett. These three short novels, the most celebrated of Samuel Beckett's later works, are published in one volume. This discussion is free and open to the public.


The University of Maryland Symposium: Beckett and the Visual Arts/The Visual in Beckett

The Symposium at the University of Maryland centers on Beckett and the visual arts and the visual in Beckett. Curated by Associate Dean Susan Schreibman, the speakers include renowned Beckett scholars Gerry Dukes, Angela Moorjani and Lois Oppenheim. Other symposium events include an exhibition of rare books Beckett in Print(s), featuring Beckett first editions and artist books illustrating Beckett's work, and a panel discussion on the symposium theme by scholars, performers, and directors. Also featured will be the Forum/Solas Nua productions of Ohio Impromptu and Come and Go, and a screening of What Where from the Beckett on Film series. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m.

Gerry Dukes is a Beckett and Joyce scholar, creator with Barry McGovern of the one-man show I'll Go On. Angela Moorjani is an Emerita Professor of French and intercultural pragmatics at the UMBC campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Her Abysmal Games in the Novels of Samuel Beckett focuses on repetition and the forms of play with being and non-being that Beckett embeds in his fiction. Lois Oppenheim is a Distinguished Scholar, Professor of French, and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Montclair State University. Her The Painted Word: Samuel Beckett's Dialogue With Art was published in 2000 by University of Michigan Press.


Radio Plays Listening Party

October 9 at the Warehouse Theatre Second Stage - FREE, no reservations required

Solas Nua and Forum Theatre present new recordings of four Beckett radio plays, featuring local talent. The radio plays will be presented in a unique informal listening environment at 8 p.m. on Monday, October 9, at the Listening Party at the Warehouse Theatre Second Stage. This event is pay-what-you-can, and reservations will not be accepted in advance.

Solas Nua’s Producing Director Dan Brick will direct Embers, which will feature Solas company member Stephanie Roswell and Michael John Casey. Forum Artistic Director Michael Dove will direct Rough for Radio I, which will feature Forum company members Fiona Bradshaw and Alexander Strain. Festival co-producer Jessica Burgess will direct Rough for Radio II and local DC actor/director/designer Denman C. Anderson will direct Words and Music.

Podcasts: In addition, Forum and Solas Nua will podcast five of Beckett’s plays for radio through the Beckett Centenary Website. Download access will be limited to the two weeks of the festival, October 1 through 15. The following are the MP3's:

Solas Nua and Forum will host screenings of Beckett on Film, a collection of films of nineteen of Beckett’s plays, at the Charles Sumner School. All screenings are free and open to the public.

The collection, produced in 2002 by Michael Colgan, the artistic director of the Gate Theatre, Dublin for RTÉ, Channel 4 and the Irish Film Boardm, includes works such as Not I, A Piece of Monologue¸ and Play. Film directors include Conor McPherson, David Mamet and Anthony Minghella. The exceptional acting talent involved includes Michael Gambon, the late John Gielgud, John Hurt, Jeremy Irons, Julianne Moore, Harold Pinter, Alan Rickman and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Forum Theatre & Dance and Solas Nua will present productions of Beckett’s shorter plays as well as readings of Beckett’s prose and poetry on the Warehouse Second Stage for the second week of the festival.

The featured shorter plays include Come and Go directed by festival co-producer Jessica Burgess, Rockaby directed by Forum Artistic Director Michael Dove, Rough for Theatre II directed by Jake Witlen and readings of Beckett’s prose and poetry by various DC artists.
