WASHINGTON, D.C., September 3, 2015 -- Solas Nua is pleased to announce the appointment of D.C.-based director and actor Rex Daugherty as theater artistic director for its 2016 season.

Daugherty, a native of Oklahoma City, has been a company member with Solas Nua since 2007. He has worked with many theaters in the D.C. Metro area, including The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Warner Theatre, Signature Theatre, Round House Theatre, Folger Theatre, No Rules Theatre Company, 1st Stage, Adventure Theatre, Imagination Stage, Rorschach Theatre, Arts on the Horizon, Charter Theatre, Source Festival, Capital Fringe, WSC Avant Bard, Forum Theatre, and Constellation Theatre Company.

Daugherty’s work with Solas Nua includes an Off-Broadway run at 59E59 Theatres of Enda Walsh’s play “Disco Pigs” and was praised by N.Y. Times critic Charles Isherwood as “exciting” and “talented” with “Mr. Daugherty in particular finding all sorts of robust comedy…”

During the past two seasons, Daugherty has produced play-development workshops and a play- reading series for Solas Nua, most recently partnering with Fishamble: The New Play Company of Dublin, Ireland, to introduce emerging Irish playwrights to Washington audiences.

“I am thrilled and humbled to step into this leadership position with Solas Nua. My history with the company has included some of the most rewarding experiences of my artistic career, and I’ve always been passionate about the mission and the inspiring work Solas Nua has done,” Daugherty said. “Solas Nua has challenged and deepened my vision as an artist, and I’m looking forward to creating enriching opportunities for other Irish and American artists.”

Dennis Houlihan, president of Solas Nua, said, “As we return our theater programming to full productions, we are fortunate to have a theater artist with Rex’s proven capability and enthusiasm in the lead.  As a gifted director, actor, and Solas Nua company member, he holds a deep understanding and commitment to our mission of bringing the best work of emerging Irish playwrights to Washington audiences and beyond."

Solas Nua, meaning new light in Irish, was founded in 2005. Solas Nua presents theater, music, visual arts, film, and literary events, including the Capital Irish Film Festival and Irish Book Day.  The company has received the Mayor’s Arts Award for Innovation in the Arts.

Solas Nua will present a full theater production this coming season, development workshops of new plays and a play reading series. Much of the work this year will focus on the centennial of the 1916 Easter Uprising. Full programming will be announced at a later date.
